FERS Disability Retirement - Federal Employee Disability Retirement Application & Appeals

The Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) provides disability retirement benefits to eligible federal employees who become unable to perform their job duties due to a medical condition. To qualify, an employee must: (1) have completed at least 18 months of creditable civilian service; (2) be disabled for useful and efficient service in their current position; (3) demonstrate that the agency cannot reasonably accommodate their medical condition; and (4) show that the disability is expected to last at least one year.

APPLICATION PROCESS AND CRITICAL ONE-YEAR DEADLINE:

Federal employees must file their FERS disability retirement application within one (1) year from the date of separation from federal service. This one-year deadline is statutory and strictly enforced - failure to file within this timeframe will result in permanent loss of eligibility for FERS disability retirement benefits, with very limited exceptions. The application process involves submitting Standard Form 3107 (Application for Immediate Retirement) along with Standard Form 3112 (Documentation in Support of Disability Retirement Application), which includes detailed medical documentation, supervisor statements, and agency certification. Given the complexity of the application and the critical nature of the one-year deadline, applicants are strongly advised to begin the process well before separation and to seek professional assistance to ensure timely and complete submission of all required documentation
